Exposure to Toxic Fumes Whilst Serving in the Armed Forces

Models of Helicopter

- Sea King – used heavily for search and rescue, maritime operations and troop transport. Personnel involved in ground maintenance, engine runs, and flight deck activities were often directly exposed to thick exhaust fumes at close range.
- Puma – a workhorse for tactical troop movement and supply missions. Ground crews regularly faced exposure during engine start-ups and shutdowns, particularly during repeated short-haul flights where rotors and engines rarely stopped.
- Chinook – with its twin rotors and powerful engines, Chinooks created large volumes of concentrated exhaust, especially during hovering, heavy lift operations and confined area landings, leaving personnel around them enveloped in fumes.
- Lynx – a versatile aircraft used for reconnaissance and utility tasks. Those involved in preparing Lynx helicopters for quick turnaround missions were often exposed to exhaust build-up around hangars and take-off zones.
- Wessex – one of the older mainstays of RAF operations, often running for extended periods on the ground during training and operational tasks, leaving surrounding personnel breathing in lingering exhaust clouds.
If you were part of the ground crew servicing them, fuelling them, loading equipment, or carrying out engine runs, it is very likely you were exposed, often at close range. - Multiple Myeloma – a blood cancer increasingly tied to long-term chemical exposure
- Kidney Cancer – connected to inhalation and absorption of PAHs and solvents
- Bladder Cancer – often seen in individuals exposed to combustion by-products
- Lung Cancer – strongly linked to inhaling fine particulate matter and chemical vapours
- Liver Cancer – associated with chronic exposure to chemical toxins in confined working spaces
Despite decades of scientific research proving benzene’s carcinogenic properties, the Ministry of Defence failed to take meaningful steps to protect its personnel. This raises serious questions about how those responsible approached the risks you faced every day:
- Why wasn’t regular benzene exposure screening carried out for personnel working in the highest-risk areas, such as around active helicopters and enclosed hangars?
